How to configure black & white screen on iPhone

Learn how to set up your iPhone display for better sleep.

Setting up black & white screen mode can significantly reduce blue light exposure and help prepare your mind for sleep.

Manual Setup

  1. Go to your device's Settings.
  2. Navigate to Accessibility > Display & Text Size.
  3. Enable Color Filters.
  4. Select Grayscale.

Manual Toggle Shortcut

  1. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Accessibility Shortcut.
  2. Select Color Filters.
  3. Triple-click the side button to toggle black & white mode.

Automatic Activation with Wind Down

To automatically enable black & white mode when your Wind Down period starts:

  1. Open the Shortcuts app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap Automation at the bottom.
  3. Tap + to create a new automation.
  4. Select Sleep under Personal Automations.
  5. Choose Wind Down Begins.
  6. Tap Next.
  7. Tap Add Action.
  8. Search for Set Color Filters and select it.
  9. Set the toggle to On.
  10. Tap Next, then Done.

Turn It Off Automatically

  1. Create another automation following steps 1-4 above.
  2. Choose Wind Down Ends instead.
  3. Follow steps 6-8, but set the toggle to Off.
  4. Complete the setup with Done.

This way, your screen can automatically switch to grayscale during Wind Down and return to normal colors when it ends.
