You wake up feeling fine. Then you check the app: 62. Suddenly you're tired. You think about the bad score on the commute, you worry about it at dinner, and by the time you're in bed you're trying very hard to sleep well — which is precisely what's keeping you awake.
Sleep researchers have a name for this pattern: orthosomnia.
What is orthosomnia?
The term was coined in 2017 by Dr. Kelly Baron and colleagues in a case report in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, describing patients who had become preoccupied with achieving perfect sleep-tracker data. Some trusted the tracker over their own body — insisting something was wrong because the app said so, even when they felt rested. The Sleep Foundation describes it as a perfectionist pursuit of ideal sleep data.
It's not a formal diagnosis. It's a pattern clinicians noticed once millions of people started wearing sleep trackers, and it has only become more common since.
How common? In a 2026 national survey of US adults, more than 30% of people who track their sleep reported symptoms of orthosomnia — roughly twice earlier estimates. Researchers now even have a validated questionnaire for measuring it, the Bergen Orthosomnia Scale, published in 2025. What started as a clinical footnote has become common enough that Time and CNN have covered it.
Signs of sleep-tracker anxiety
- You check your sleep score before you've even gotten out of bed.
- A bad score changes how you feel, even on mornings when you woke up feeling fine.
- You feel pressure at bedtime to “perform,” like the night is a test.
- You've rearranged evenings, canceled plans, or gone to bed anxious in service of the number.
- One bad night feels like a failure instead of just a bad night.
Why trying harder makes it worse
Sleep is one of the few things in life that deteriorates the harder you try at it. Falling asleep requires your nervous system to stand down, and monitoring your own performance keeps it on duty. This is why sleep clinicians often work on reducing sleep effort: the pressure to sleep perfectly is itself a source of the arousal that prevents sleep.
A nightly score feeds that loop. It turns rest into a performance review, delivered every morning, based on an estimate — consumer trackers approximate sleep stages from movement and heart rate; they don't measure your brain. The score is a model of your night, not the truth of it. Your body's own signal — how you feel a couple of hours after waking — is data too, and it's the data that actually matters.
What to try instead
- Take the score off the morning menu. Keep the wearable if you like it, but stop checking the number first thing for two weeks. Notice whether your mornings feel different.
- Judge the day, not the data. Ask how you feel at 10am, not what the app said at 7am.
- Work on inputs, not outputs. You can't directly control how you sleep, but you can control what you do before bed: a consistent wake-up time, daylight in the morning, an earlier caffeine cutoff, a real wind-down routine, and keeping the phone out of the loop at night.
- Change one thing at a time. A single small habit you keep beats five optimizations you abandon.
